South Carolina women's soccer captain Grace Fisk has been named a MAC Hermann Trophy Semifinalist, the United Soccer Coaches announced Tuesday. This is the second time in the past three seasons Fisk has been named a Semifinalist for the annual honor that recognizes the top women's soccer player in NCAA Division I.
"Grace Fisk has been a leader on and off the field for our program since she joined us," South Carolina head coach Shelley Smith said. "A wonderful person, a dedicated student-athlete and a true team player committed to being her best. What an honor to be recognized again this year as MAC Hermann Semifinalist, and deservedly so. We are proud of all she does to represent the University of South Carolina and our program."
Fisk, a native of Bromley, London, has been one of the most dominant defenders in the country in her three seasons at South Carolina. The senior became the only player in SEC history to earn three major Defensive Player of the Year awards in a career when she was named SEC Defender of the Year. Since Fisk joined the program in 2017, the Gamecocks hold an impressive goals against average of 0.44 and have posted 45 shutouts the third most in the NCAA during that span. During her two years in Columbia, the Gamecocks are 31-1-3 at home and hold a record of 22-3-5 in the SEC.
This season the two-time All-American anchored a South Carolina defense that has posted 17 shutouts, the second most in the country. As a team, the Gamecocks 0.29 goals against average this season is the second best in the country. As an individual Fisk has directly impacted two matches this season, notching an assist in the 1-0 victory over then-No 13 Arkansas and scoring the game-winning goal for the Gamecocks in their 2-0 victory over No. 11 Kansas in the NCAA Third Round.
The 15 semifinalists for the 2019 MAC Hermann Trophy were determined by All-America voting conducted by NCAA Division I women's soccer coaches with oversight from the United Soccer Coaches Division I Women's Senior College All-America Committee.
Voting for the three MAC Hermann Trophy finalists will get underway following the announcement of the semifinalists. The finalists will be revealed in December, and the winner will be announced on Jan. 10, 2020, at the Hermann Trophy Press Conference and Awards Banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.
