South Carolina men's soccer vs. Wofford

Mark Berson

South Carolina men’s soccer tied the match at the 12-minute mark, but Clemson responded with three more goals of its own, and the Tigers earned the 4-1 victory in the Gamecocks’ 2019 season opener on Friday.

Logan Frost’s first-career goal knotted the match at 1-1 early in the first half. Buenyamin Yusufoglu earned his first assist as a Gamecock on the play.

The young Gamecocks had seven newcomers in the starting lineup, including five freshmen, while 11 different men made their South Carolina debut in the match.

With the win, Clemson tied the series at 4-4 all-time when the two teams meet in the first match of a season.

South Carolina held strong after an early Tiger goal in the first half as a Frost goal off the Yusufoglu assist tied the season opener at 1-1 just 12 minutes into the year.

But as the young Gamecocks worked through first game-excitement and learning experiences that come with young groups, a veteran Clemson squad responded with two more goals before halftime and one in the second to earn the first Palmetto Series point of the new school year.

The Gamecocks are set to return home on Tuesday, Sept. 3 for the home opener against Gardner-Webb. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
